Tell Me About Yourself

By Heather Carpenter | March 3, 2008

It’s the most dreaded question at an interview:interview.jpg

Please tell me about yourself.

Well, I have 2 brothers, and a dog….

Not quite.

So what do potential employers want to hear when they ask that question?

The “Please tell me about yourself” question is your chance to shine. Employers pose the question in an attempt to hear what skills, qualifications and characterizations you possess that will make you an outstanding asset to their organization. Use the question as an opportunity to show off your experience, the skills you have acquired both working and in the classroom, and your desires to be with such an amazing company as XYZ.

Example: “I am a receiving my Bachelor of Science in Management from Fisher College in May. I have had the wonderful opportunity of interning with ABC Shoe Shine where I have learned the ins and outs of running a small, family-owned business. I was even so fortunate that I was able to travel with the owner to a trade show and learn about buying for the business. I would love to use the skills I have acquired through both my education and my internship to increase profitability for your company.”
