R U 2 Informal?
By Heather Carpenter | August 6, 2008
With the summer nearing close recent graduates are finding themselves in one of three places; having secured employment after a grueling search process, continuing the grueling search process or just beginning to search for full-time employment. If you are having a difficult time finding employment or are just beginning the process you should seriously consider the formality of the language you are using when emailing potential employers. In a Wall Street Journal article dated July 29 the issue of language formality was explored. Today’s graduates are used to the informal speak of texting. Although this might work with friends or on Facebook, it is never appropriate with employers.
It’s time to evaluate. If you are using the following abbreviated words you need to take a minute and review every message you send to an employer (you should do this anyhow):
- R
- U
- TTYL
- TY
- JK
- LOL
- L8R
- LTNS
You get the picture.
Also, no emoticons (little smiley faces) are ever appropriate. Perhaps someday email formality will go the way of cursive writing and disappear, but for now you need to follow the rules to obtain your dream job.
