Job Search Resources

By Heather Carpenter | October 14, 2008

There are a number of different places job seekers of all types can get extra help with the job search process.

Career Services: Regardless of where you went to undergraduate or graduate school, most colleges have a career services department that is available to service you.  Please call the alumni department of your alma mater to see what services are offered.

Massachusetts Vocational Rehabilitation Services: MA Rehab is a great resource for anyone with a documented disability.  They will often provide assistance with job search and job placement.  Once a job is secured they can also aid in adjusting to the work place by acting as an advocate with your employer and in some cases acting as a job coach.  MA Rehab also has limited funds in providing supplemental education.  Visit the Massachusetts Vocational Rehabilitation website for more information.

MA One Stop Career Centers: Massachusetts is somewhat unique in how they offer career services to their constituents.  Throughout Massachusetts there are a number of One Stop Career Centers that offer workshops, job placement assistance, job postings, resume critique and other services.  The One Stops are run independently and will often differ from one to the other.  They are all free to Massachusetts residents, so feel free to explore them until you find the right fit for you.  Locate a One Stop Career Center near you!

Company Resources: If you have been recently laid off many companies will offer internal assistance to help you get back on your feet.  Be sure to ask your Human Resources office about any available help.  Additionally, most companies want to see their current employees succeed in the company, and not have them look outside. Before considering moving up and out think about how you may move up and stay within your current employer.  Investigate whether your company has a Workforce Development office and find out what opportunities exist.

Boston Globe: The  Boston Globe has a great career services section to their website.  They allow you to investigate industries, search for jobs, post resumes, search career events and read articles about the Massachusetts work status.  Visit the Boston Globe job website powered by Monster.

Women for Hire: Women for Hire is just one of many specially founded organizations to help a designated group with their employment needs.  Women for Hire hosts career fairs along with a daily newsletter and job magazine especially for women.  Visit WomenforHire.com for more information.
